Nicolosi/Etna

This lodge is located at 1.700 slm in the etna south area. Few distance from
here (2 km) Sapienza lodge and its important area. Nicolosi centre is 16
km fare. Nicolosi town is 16 km from Catania, alt 700 m, on the S slopes
of Etna, amidst volcanic cones created at various times known as the Monti
Rossi (red mountains), area 42.5 sq km, pop. 6,074. Economy: agricolture,
stock breeding, tourism. The town of Nicolosi developed around the benedectine
monastery os san Nicolò l'arena, founded in the 12th c. it became part of the
paternò fief in 1477, following that family's vicissitudes until 1852.
Nicolosi has always been a starting point for excursions on the volcano. Just
205 m higher up is the crater of the monti rossi, covered on one side by a
green pine-wood. Wolfgang Goethe in his "Journay to Italy", gives us a
masterly description of it.
